The KandyPens Rubi is a pod-style portable vaporizer for use with both e-liquids and oil extracts. With the Rubi, the KandyPens brand seeks to establish themselves as top dogs in the concentrate/ e-liquid vape game, challenging long-standing popular models like the JUUL. Is the Rubi worth the price tag of $70 CND and is it the right vaporizer for you? Keep reading, and we will let you be the judge.

Battery on the KandyPens Rubi

Being a relatively inexpensive model, you probably shouldn’t expect top-notch power when it comes to the Rubi. The device uses a Lithium ion battery that clocks in at an underwhelming 280 mAh. We go about 90 minutes of use out of the Rubi before needing to recharge, but we found out that some can get up to almost 2 hours of usage. This is not a bad usage time, even though the power of the Rubi’s battery is on the low side. It takes about 80 minutes to fully charge this unit.

An LED light in the center of the Rubi device lets you know what battery life you have. A white light tells you that it’s fully charged; a red light means that you’ll need to charge your Rubi soon, and a flashing red light means that the device is completely dead. This is easy to understand even if you are someone who skips reading the instructions.

Using the KandyPens Rubi

The Rubi stands about four inches high, which is a bit taller than some of its competitors, but still fits nicely in the palms of most users’ hands. You can fill the unit with up to 1 milliliter of whatever e-juice or oil concentrate you choose, which is a solid size.

KandyPens Rubi Portability

The original Rubi looks sleek with its silver finish and rounded corners, and KandyPens recently released the Rubi with 3 other color choices – black, pink or red.

We still like the original silver finish the best, but the new colors look cool, too. The mouthpiece fits snugly and doesn’t move around, which is an issue that some other portable vaporizers have.

When it’s time to reload the pod with your e-juice, simply take off the rubber stopper and you’re good to go. To start vaping, just inhale, as the Rubi is draw-sensitive and has no buttons to press. While there is only one temperature with the Rubi, it still performs quite well for what it is.

KandyPens Rubi Detached Mouthpiece

For an affordable device, it is also pretty rugged and durable, with few users reporting the need to replace any components. One of the only drawbacks of the design of this device is that you have to take the pod out to see how much e-liquid you have left. While this is minor, it can get annoying for some users, especially those who are used to their e-juice devices having some kind of view or indicator of how much is left in the tank. The device is also leak-proof as we didn’t experience any leakage.

The JUUL e-liquid device is perhaps the most popular of its kind. The Rubi one-ups the JUUL in the area of being an open pod, which means you are able to add any of your own e-liquid that you choose. The JUUL is a closed pod, so you have to buy whatever the manufacturers decide to put out. The JUUL does come with pre-filled liquid pods, though, and the Rubi does not come with any kind of liquid out of the box.

Vapor Quality on the KandyPens Rubi

The KandyPens Rubi utilizes an impressive ceramic coil atomizer that is wrapped in Japanese cotton, which really delivers excellent vapor quality and flavor. Because of the weak battery, you probably won’t be blowing the thickest of clouds, but most users are not disappointed. A nice feature about the design of the Rubi is that it feels like a cigarette in user’s hands. This is helpful for those looking to quit, as a big part of the addiction to cigarettes is the fact that smokers like to feel their smokes in their fingers. There is no clear-cut science as to whether e-juice containing nicotine is completely safe, but study after study suggests that vaping is much healthier than smoking.

I enjoy the Kandypens Rubi but honestly with the whole black market oil vape crises thing I feel was safer using my Pax Era because I know what’s in my oil. Aside from that the Rubi is a really good device and worth it imo just for the option to fill the pods urself.

Small, really portable, works great, very easy to use, the re-fillable pods are my favorite feature. If you’re able to source high-quality distillate or live resin sauce and stuff, then filling your own is just the best way period.

Can u use the Kandypens Rubi with weed (like unground fresh dry bud?)

    1. Avatar for Tools420 Tools420 says:

No, the Rubi is only used with oil using the rubi pod cartridges.

Initially I was very skeptical considering the repuitation Kandypens has for putting chaep vapes out there for a high price, slapping some ‘premium’ sticker on there and calling it a day. I’m very glad to report that that is NOT that case! In fact I really hope this is a good note for the future coming.
I have a Pax Era too which I use very often but the Rubi has one distinct advantage – the pods can be refilled. The Era pods are just so expensive compared to just filling it with your own distillate, it’s almost a deal-breaker for me.
The Era has better vapor quality and temperature control, but honestly the Rubi is just cheap, effective, and has the re-fillable pod feature. Really nice to see, good step in the right direction.

Looks really nice, my friends love it and the battery is actually pretty good! Can get like a hundred puffs off a single charge which imo is just ifne since I don’t vape that much anyways. Really small we take it to the movies its like a few sticks of gum lol.

  10. Avatar for Joshua K. Joshua K. says:

Good lil vape bought 1 for my gf and she really enjoys it a lot. I tried it a few times and then bought another one just for me! I actually have like 4 pods for e-juice and 2 pods for distillate and keep them labeled so I don’t forget which is which. Really small, pretty good performance, way better than a JUUL and those stupid things out there like that.
If I would change one thing tho I would give it some temperature control options because youre kinda just stuck with the one which isn’t so nice imo.
