The new and improved Crafty portable vaporizer from the well-respected manufacturer Storz and Bickel has had some significant upgrades made to it over the previous models. The upgraded 2017 version of the Crafty can vape both dry herbs and concentrates, and has an improved battery and some interesting new features to brag about which some may find useful or some may feel they are unnecessary.

OG Crafty vs. Crafty Plus

The new version of the Crafty was released in early November 2019. It is called the Crafty+. To learn more about it read our Crafty Plus Review.

Original Crafty Vape Battery Life

For as well as the original Crafty vaporizer performed when it comes to vapor production, quality, and taste, the battery was lacking, especially in comparison to other high-end models. With other models lasting sometimes up to 90 minutes, 45 minutes of juice from the original version just is not going to cut it. Manufacturer Storz and Bickel obviously noticed this as an issue, giving the new model an extra 20% battery life compared to the original version. With the more powerful battery, you’re looking at an extra 15 or 20 minutes, extending the total battery life of the device up to around an hour or so of continuous usage. There are obviously models out there with batteries that last longer, but at least now the Crafty’s battery won’t be looked down upon as a huge issue.

The Crafty will take you about two hours to fully charge up and can be vaped while recharging. Since the lithium battery of the new Crafty is internal, you can’t swap it, which is a bit of a downside in comparison to other high-end vapes. Should the battery need to be replaced, you might be spending more than you’d like because of its internal nature.

Since it’s release, vapes have come a long way, so be sure to check out our list of the Best Dry Herb Vaporizers.

How to use the Crafty vape?

The new Crafty comes standard with two set temperature options, one of 180 degrees Celsius and the other being boosted mode at 195 degrees Celsius. You can change the two temperatures to anything you want with the Crafty’s smartphone app – anywhere from 40 degrees all the way up to 210 degrees Celsius. You can also use the boost setting to gradually increase temperatures at degree intervals, which is a nice feature for finding the exact setting that is best for you. In addition, you can use the app as a remote start up, which acts almost like a remote starter for your car, heating it up on those cold winter mornings. You can even use your smart watch with your Crafty if you so choose.

The new Crafty is about 4.5″ tall and weighs 4.8 ounces, and is box shaped that fits comfortably in your palm and is easily transported in a bag or purse. The Crafty will fit about .25 grams of material in a single session, which is a nice size. This unit will take up to two full minutes to heat up and be ready to vape, which is definitely an area in which the Crafty lacks in comparison to its competitors. The Crafty+ will vibrate when it is ready to vape. A really cool feature is the find my Crafty option, which will make the unit vibrate and light up if you can’t find it. This is especially useful if you’re out at a concert or something and it’s dark and you accidentally drop the device. Losing a device this expensive can really be a bummer, and the find my Crafty feature helps prevent that.

When the original Crafty was about to shut itself off using the auto shut-off feature, it would vibrate and power itself down after two minutes of non-use. The new crafty gets an upgraded auto shut off feature that vibrates for a full 30 seconds, and then will vibrate for a few seconds each time for several times until it finally shuts itself off. You can void the auto shut off feature by pressing and holding the power button, and this will keep the unit on for another two minutes.

Original Crafty Vapor Quality

The vapor quality on pretty much all of the vaporizers that are made by Storz and Bickel is top notch, and the new Crafty is really no different. It really doesn’t matter how much herb you pack into the bowl of this unit, you’ll get a consistently delicious session every single time, with great vapor production making some nice, thick clouds. There is a cooling unit on the very top of the Crafty’s chamber, which does a great job at ensuring the vapor you inhale is smooth and as cool as possible. The vapor quality, taste and smoothness is one area where the Crafty really shines.

What’s in the Crafty kit?

In addition to the Crafty new model, it comes with a USB charger and charge cord, a tool to help fill and pack your herbs, a grinder, a brush for cleaning your unit, a pad to let you vape liquids, three extra screens, additional rings that seal the unit, and of course an instruction manual. Although this vaporizer only comes with a 2-year warranty, Storz and Bickel are known for producing vaporizers that simply stand the test of time.
