Wax and oil concentrates are fundamentally different than dry herb. If you’re a bit confused about the differences of the two, head on over to our What is a dry herb vaporizer page instead to understand more on how dry herb vaporizers work.
Wax pens work by heating up your concentrates up with either a hot coil or plate atomizer. Different sorts of concentrates exist, such as; wax, rosin, live resin, budder, BHO, shatter, and more! Check out Cannabis Concentrates 101pageto develop a further understanding of what exactly concentrates are and how they’re different than normal herb!
You might see the bottom part of a wax pen referred to as a battery. There are two main parts of a wax vaporizer – the battery and atomizer. The battery is the part of the device which of course stores all the power, but is also responsible for setting temperatures and output power. This power goes to the atomizer which has the concentrates in it. Heating up quickly to a few hundred degrees, your material then gets vaporized and ready for consumption.
Wax and oil vaporizers are not designed to be used with dry herb at all, only with their intended material. However, some dry herb vaporizers can definitely be used with waxy concentrates like rosin or live resin. Examples of these devices would be the Storz & Bickel Crafty+ and Firefly 2+, which are adept at using both dry herb and wax! If you’re interested in a dry herb vaporizer, check out the above units and head on over to our dry herb vaporizer buyers guide to help you get started!
Some of the devices found above are designed to be used with an oil vape cartridge. An example of an oil vape would be the Kandypens Rubi and Bo One vapes. Oil cartridge vapes are designed for use with viscous oil which is normally pre-filled, but also can be filled by yourself. Oil vapes are typically very small and can be taken with you anywhere.
While there has been a lot of controversy over oil vapes and health, a pure and high-quality oil is a safe pick and won’t present you with any health problems. Just make sure it comes from a reputable and high-quality source! In exchange for this, oil vapes are super small, discreet, and are roughly the size of a small marker.
Pairing a wax or oil vape with a water pipe is a great way to bring the experience to the next level. You can enjoy less throat and lung irritation alongside some massive, mind-blowing hits when using wax through a bong. While some wax vapes will fit natively onto any water pipe or bong with a 14mm joint, a waterpipe adaptor (WPA) may be needed to round off the experience.
