What is a 510 thread battery?
Let's start out with the name to simplify things. '510 thread' has to do with the universally adopted thread size that connects a battery to an oil cartridge. This battery runs power through the cartridge's atomizer and heats up the oil in order to vaporize it.
How to use a 510 thread battery?
The cartridge is composed of three main parts; the atomizer, a mouthpiece and the tank of oil. The atomizer is typically a wire coil or ceramic element while the oil is contained in a casing made out of tempered glass or a poly-carbonate (plastic) housing. When you connect a 510 thread battery to the cartridge, the battery activates the atomizer which then heats up the oil in the tank. The heated oil begins to develop into a vapor that is then accessible through the mouthpiece when you take a draw.
How do vape cartridges work?
Basically, one part is a power source and the other is a heating element with oil in a tank.
Just to note, some companies will occasionally also provide a magnetic adapter. This is the case with the snug Ccell Palm and the Tronian Tautron. With these, you'll be first fastening your cart to the adapter which will then attach to the battery. The advantage of these tiny adapters is that you get to avoid constantly screwing and unscrewing your cartridge and instead, they magnetically slide in for quick use.
Are dab pens and carts the same?
One of the biggest benefits of a 510 Thread is how easy it is to use. You can pick up a battery and pre-filled cartridges from your vendor of choice and you're pretty much ready to go.Make sure to pick up our Refillable 510 Thread Cartridges so that you can use your own oil and save money in the long run! For more seasoned users, this allows them to control the concentration and flavor profile. This method can be much more cost-effective for these users and it's what makes a 510 thread battery their unit of choice.
How to charge a 510 thread battery?
Unless you have purchased a disposable pen, your 510 Thread Battery will come with a cord to charge it. This cord will usually be a standard USB cable with a power adapter and can be charged the same way you would charge your cellphone. It is important to note, that these power adapters will support different watts so it is important to only use the charger that has been supplied with your 510 Thread Battery.
Different kinds of vape batteries
These are already some of the most straightforward and easy-to-use devices when it comes to vaping cannabis. But some companies, like the tiny but mighty Pitron, aim to make it even easier by having a draw-to-activate system. No buttons or controls to worry about with these batteries. As the name suggests, they become activated when you take a draw through the mouthpiece.
510 Thread Batteries with a button just means these are units that allow more control of overvoltage (temperature) and let the user choose this with a simple push of a button. Tronian Nutron for example offers its users a voltage range of 2.6V – 4.0V. For more information as to why this should matter, read our next section!
How 510 thread battery voltages work
The next thing to consider before you buy is the voltage. Most batteries will only come with a fixed voltage (or temperature) setting which is typically 3.0V. This is enough power to heat the average coil atomizer and enough to just get an easy and smooth hit. More intricate kits will have up to five temperature settings and can be used with ceramic atomizers. These kits can be more expensive but with the ceramic atomizer being able to retain more heat, there is less wear and tear on the battery. The Nutron amazingly offers 3 voltage settings in a stealthy compact vape and being under $15, this is one of the most affordable units on the market. And if that's not convincing enough, check out our Nutron review. The temperature variations will also allow you to control the quality of the vapor as lower voltages allow for full flavor production while higher ones deliver a vapor that's higher in potency.
It's important to remember that for these reasons, only the charger that comes with your unit should be used to prolong the lifespan of your battery.
510 Thread Batteries Key Decision Factors
Battery LifeAs a rule of thumb, you'll be able to get about 200 hits from 500mAh of battery life, which would be equivalent to about 2-3 days of heavy use. Be sure to get a larger battery if you will be using your vape frequently.

Draw-Activated vs. Manual HeatingMost beginners will tend to enjoy draw-activated vape batteries because they are easier to use. Draw-activated batteries will normally be better with thin oils so that their heating can work instantly and not clog the wick up. For thicker oils or for those that prefer bigger clouds, you might like batteries with a button for manual heating that will also have variable voltages for more session customization.
PortabilityThe thinner vape pen' style will overall be much easier to carry around with yourself in a pocket. The bigger batteries like the CCell Palm might have a bigger mAh, but will also be thicker and might be more difficult to bring around with yourself. Also be sure to note whether the cartridge will be submerged into the body or not!
