Is The Freeze Pipe worth it?

If you’ve been looking for a nifty cannabis pipe that offers the possibility of an extra layer of cooling, then you might be interested in The Freeze Pipe. It features sealed-in gel inserts that will freeze without breaking your glass as you may have possibly done in your younger years by forgetting your bong in that garage! In this review, we’ll be going over the pros and cons and more details to help you decide if it’s worth buying or not. Does it cool your smoke? Is it portable? Read on and find out.

Freeze Pipe Key Features

Working the same way as a normal pipe for the most part, The Freeze Pipe operates the same way as your traditional glass or wooden pipe would with a loading chamber, mouthpiece end, and the need for a lighter or torch to ignite your dry herb. The cool additions as a take on a weed pipe are in the form of the sleek design, chamber cab, and the freezing glycerin inserts lining the spiral cooling smoke pathway. While the winding zirconia air path isn’t new and is used on great vaporizer like the G Pen Elite II, it’s fairly uncommon for an affordable pipe. This longer surface for the smoke to pass helps to cool it down before it reaches your lungs and will help to cool down your smoke as much as 300F before you inhale, as claimed by the manufacturer.

Does The Freeze Pipe actually cool your vapor?

For the glycerin gel in the body of the pipe, there’s such a thing as too much cooling! This can lead to your smoke cooling to the point of condensation and making draw resistance difficult during inhales. If you leave it in the freezer too long, you’ll be minimizing the amount of smoke that gets to the mouthpiece as the glycerin is too cold to be effective. In general, you’ll find the best results to be around 1-3 hours left in the freezer. Any more or less than that, and you won’t be getting any cooling effects, or you’ll get too much and the draw resistance will be too high for an enjoyable session.

Is The Freeze Pipe Portable?

The Freeze Pipe is about six inches by 2 inches by 2 inches, so it won’t be the most portable vape on the block by any means. For it’s cooling effects to be maximized you’ll also only have a small window to use the freezing effects, especially if it’s a warm day outside.

Smoke Quality

We admit that the cooling effects are real on this novel weed pipe, but overall, we personally know that you’ll be able to get much better healthier rips with just as much cooling by using a DynaVap battery-free vaporizer with a DynaVap Waterpipe Adapter and 14mm whip bubbler. You’ll be getting just as much cloud production without any of the carcinogens associated with combustion. For more information you can read about this on our history of cannabis vaporizers article.

In short, while you’ll be able to get cooler smoke, you’ll still be getting hundreds of extra chemicals in your smoke compared to just a few in cannabis vapor. So, while you may not be coughing like a mad man after a nice rip on The Freeze Pipe, you’ll still be getting smoke that will be harmful to your lungs in the long run.

A great alternative to switch from smoking to vaping with would be the Arizer Solo 2. With a lengthy cooling glass mouthpiece that doubles down as the bowl at the bottom, all users will have to do is load it and then turn the vaporizer on. With up to three hours of battery life, you won’t have to worry about keeping your battery charged, which can be a turn-off for those switching to dry herb vaping from smoking.

How to use The Freeze Pipe?

While you can leave it overnight in your freezer without the worry of having it explode – It’s recommended that it stays for a maximum of one hour there. Based on our tests though, the best results were around two hours left in the freezer.

When it comes to actual usage, the instructions for the Freeze pipe are fairly straightforward as you use it just like any other regular weed pipe.

There is an optional bowl reducer / ash filter that will serve the same function as a bowl on a bong. After you’ve packed the removable bowl, drop it into the top of the pipe and hit it like you would a normal pipe (light the bowl, finger over the carb, take a pull.) While you’re hitting the pipe, the oversized chamber is filling up with smoke. Once you’ve filled it up enough, remove the bowl piece like you would on a bong to get a full clear. This massively increases airflow and allows you to take a bong sized rip out of a pipe! The smoke then travels through the frozen glycerin coils, and you’ll get nothing but a cool and smooth hit. The filter / bowl makes it really easy to pack and empty out your bowl without having to smack your piece on the counter or dig out your ash. You can choose to use the normal chamber as well, it will just be a bit harder to clean and is prone to clogging your airflow.

Best Freeze Pipe Tips and Tricks

With a DynaVap Fat Mouthpiece, or any water pipe adapter with a multiple sizes on it, will be able to be use your favorite vaporizer, using The Freeze Pipe as a bong piece. Something with good airflow would be optimal, like an Arizer Air SE, would be optimal for using the cooling feature to its best potential.

How to clean The Freeze Pipe?

The only part you’ll have to worry about is the glass bowl insert that will trap all of the loose ash that would normally get into the body of your weed pipes.

Pros and Cons

While this is a super cool looking glass cannabis pipe that will offer some unique cooling, it’s overall a gimmick. After some use, you’ll find that it doesn’t pull easily and will clog up rather quickly. In general, you’d get very similar smoke quality from a wooden pipe at 1/10th of the price from a local headshop. For $60USD, you’d be much better off picking up a Litl 1 vaporizer and 10mm curved bubbler that would provide increased airflow, healthier vapor, and more session creativity.

There are a also a lot of issues if you look into the shipping and overall customer service problems customers have faced with the Freeze Pipe company.

Conclusion

  • 2023 Update: Based on customer feedback, we no longer recommend this at all. Consider the Zeus Iceborn as a great alternative.

In conclusion, while the idea of a pipe with a lunch box freezer wrapped around its smoke pathway sounds cool, it doesn’t exactly do very much to justify its steep price. While people have been throwing icy water in their bongs for years, it’s actually hot water that will best hydrate the dry smoke from combustion. Just below boiling, and you’ll have more hydrated smoke that will be easier on the lungs than normal or cold water.

You’ll still get the burning sensation in the back of your throat, but the fact that there is the glass screen makes a big difference to keeping the pipe clean – We’ll give it that. If you’re looking for a travel friendly novelty to keep in your freezer for the right moment to bring out at parties, then this is the right pipe for you. Overall though, we recommend doing yourself a favor and picking up a cannabis vaporizer.
