Is the Yocan Cubex worth it?
The Yocan Cubex is the newest dab pen from Yocan and is starting to gain some popularity for the new coil it uses, known as the TGT coil, which is the same one that we saw in our Yocan Pillar Review.
Despite the affordable cost, it pumps out some solid clouds – So what’s the trade-off?
In this review, we’ll be giving you all the pros and cons of the Cubex, as well as who we think it’ll be best for. Let’s get into it!

TGT Target Tech Coils
The Cubex uses a TGT coil, which is also known as Target Tech.
Breaking down what that means, it’s a quad quartz coil that’s surrounded by a ceramic plate. It’s very similar to the Yocan Evolve Plus XL, except the coils are a bit smaller and more concentrated. In other words, it’ll still be ripping through your concentrates, just a bit slower on this design.
If you love having a dab pen that pumps out massive clouds as opposed to pumping out the flavor, then you’ll like the Cubex.
Vapor Quality
In terms of vapor quality, let me first start by saying that the first test I did was running the pre-heat temperature mode, which is lower than the three pre-sets you can choose. The result was already a thick white cloud. However, it wasn’t overly hot and didn’t make me cough. It had the distinct metallic taste that I’ve come to expect from the brand though.
I definitely wouldn’t recommend using the Cubex with expensive concentrates like live resins or live rosins, but cheap wax instead where the taste would never be great on something like a ceramic bucket on a Puffco Plus.
The way that the ceramic is set up is for the dab to melt into the coils, which means it will still crank smoke out even if you don’t have a dab loaded, similar to how a vape cartridge with a wick works.
How to get better flavor on the Cubex?
To get better flavor on the Cubex, you’ll be able to flood the atomizer with more concentrate than normal, which means about three rice grains worth. Instead of having your dab instantly, it will take time to vaporize, meaning you’ll be at least tasting some terps. You can also load on the side of the chamber so that it’s slower to drip into the coils.
Extraction Rating
In terms of dab extraction, the Cubex zaps your dab right away to create huge billows of white smoke. I don’t even really consider it to be a 420 vaporizer because of how strong it is. It’s not my preference, but some people just want huge clouds and a decent high, and that’s what the Cubex does best.
Yocan Cubex Build Quality
In terms of build quality, the Cubex is cheap but made to hit hard.
There isn’t too much else too much different than on other Yocan dab pens aside from the coil and square body of the Cubex.
One thing to note is that the TGT chamber is narrower than on the Plus models, so you won’t be able to get Q-Tips on the coils for cleaning. Because of this change, you’ll have to be soaking them in isopropyl alcohol often to keep the flavor from tasting burnt.
Just a heads up that you shouldn’t do too many heating cycles without reloading or cleaning the coil, as it will progressively taste more and more burnt, which can’t be healthy I am thinking.
If you’re a heavy user, I suggest soaking that you soak your coils once a week. I would expect heavy users to get about a month of use from the TGT coil before needing a replacement. For reference, a pack of five replacement TGT coils will cost you about $45.
I will say that I would trust the metal body of the Yocan Cubex to hold up well against drops as there’s not much that can break apart from maybe the mouthpiece cap.
Portability
For portability, the Cubex has some nice features like a fully aluminum design and magnetic mouthpiece cap to keep everything secure while you travel.
The coil still has a threaded lid which you’ll need to unscrew to access the chamber, so it might be best to pick up a Vape Case where you’ll be able to store everything you need more securely, like your dab container, dab tool, and charging cable.
Battery Life
With a 1400mAh battery, there’s tons of battery to last heavy users a day of use. If you like cranking the power button down on the highest voltage, I’d say you can expect about six to eight hard-hitting sessions. If portability isn’t important to you, you might consider checking out The Core 2.1 E-Rig as a big upgrade over the Cubex as it can crank out 30 sessions.
- A nice feature is the USB-C charging that it uses, which will have you back to full in around an hour.
How to Use the Yocan Cubex?
The commands of the Cubex will be familiar to people who are fans of Concentrate Vaporizers. It uses the standard commands:
- Five clicks of the power button will turn it on or off
- Three clicks will choose between the voltages of 4.2V / 3.6V / 3.0V
- Two clicks will activate a short 10-second pre-heat which works best for glob-sized dabs
- Pressing and holding the power button will fire the atomizer at your set temperature for a maximum of fifteen seconds
The kit includes a nice dab tool, and you’ll be able to load the side walls of the Cubex because it gets so hot that it doesn’t matter where you place your dab.
Community Consensus
People that stick to cheap dab pens tend to like them, and that’s the case with the Cubex. The only complaint that I am consistently seeing on Cubex Reddit forums is the battery dying soon into ownership, or people not expecting it to taste as metallic as it does.

Who’s the Yocan Cubex best for?
The Yocan Cubex is the perfect Dab Pen for anyone that cares most about putting out clouds of smoke. The TGT coils are cheap and overtuned, so you won’t be tasting any of the terpenes from your dab, but the high is nice and the smoke is cool, so overall it’s decent for how cheap it is.
While it might not be at the top of our Best Dab Pens list, some people will really like it!
