If you’re a beginner looking to buy your first E-Rig and have preferred harsh and couch-locking highs from smoking, then the Yocan Pillar is probably for you.

• It features a simple and portable design, and its quad quartz coils are going to have you sinking into your couch in no time flat as you watch the clock tick by.

Let’s see if it’s worth the $100 or so price tag to get you started for your first Electric Dab Rig.

Quad Quartz Atomizers

The Yocan Pillar uses a cheap quad quartz coil (TGT coil) that is made to heat up quickly and produce smoke, not vapor. You can’t convince me otherwise on that fact.

It’s very similar to the coil on their Yocan Magneto model, and also the same TGT coil found on their new Yocan Cubex. It will heat up nearly instantly and start glowing red as you watch a thick plume of white smoke start to form in the chamber.

Smoky Vapor Quality

• The vapor tasted like pennies / burnt metal no matter what setting I was using.

However, the redeeming quality that I liked was the fact that the vapor was surprisingly cool every single session. Even on the second voltage and taking huge inhales, I only coughed once over my several days of testing.

What I didn’t like was how quickly it seemed my dabs were instantly burning, through. While normally I could expect to milk a dab for some chill hits and maybe even two full heating cycles like on The Core 2.1, the Pillar seemed to zap my dabs right away, leaving nothing but a burnt mark where they once were after the session.

• I would stick to only using cheaper concentrates in the Pillar as they’ll be more cost-effective in the long run, and you won’t feel like you’re missing out on the flavor from high terpene concentrates

Portability Review

In terms of outright portability, I’m a big fan of the Yocan Pillar design. Similar to the Utillian 5 with the Utillian Glass Bubbler, the Pillar is a great step in the right direction in my opinion.

It won’t quite fit into your pocket, so I’d recommend the Stashlogix Silverton Vape Case which uses a hard exterior and will help keep your glass secure and from breaking. Good Battery Life

With a large 1400 mAh battery base, you’ll be able to get at least six 30-second heating cycles before needing a recharge with the USB-C charging cable. Charging from dead will also only take two hours maximum which will be a nice spec for heavy users to hear.

Yocan Pillar Build Quality

In terms of build quality, the Pillar is built pretty well:

• It uses modern USB-C charging, a big screen to indicate the battery level and voltage level, and the magnetic attachment on the bubbler is a nice feature.

I would say that its design is somewhat similar to the Dr. Dabber Boost Evo with its magnetic atomizer and magnetic bubbler. Because the Boost Evo uses a direct quartz-to-glass vapor pathway and uses high-temperature pre-sets, it’s a great E-Rig for those that are quitting traditional dab rigs due to its similar performance.

The build quality on the Pillar is a bit less, especially on the atomizer as its temperature will gradually climb throughout your session. With higher quality E-Rigs like the Boost Evo or Focus V Carta 2, they use internal heat sensors so that your set temperature is constant and accurate.

Comparable E-Rigs

Based on my experience using Yocan vaporizers, they tend to just blast your concentrates with heat, and the Pillar does that as well, but manages to get some extra cooling thanks to the nifty bubbler. I hope that they continue to improve upon their E-Rig designs because honestly, I do see a market for an E-Rig under $100.

As mentioned, the most similar comparison would be the Utillian 5 and Glass Bubbler, but in terms of an outright E-Rig design, the XMAX Qomo is one of the only budget E-Rigs on the market right now. Its performance is pretty similar to the Pillar, but with more taste because it uses a bucket atomizer instead of exposed coils.

How to Use the Yocan Pillar?

The Yocan Pillar uses commands that we’ve all come to know:

• x5 clicks turn it on / off
• x3 clicks cycles through the three voltages of 3.2V / 3.7V / 4.2V
• x2 clicks begin a 30 second heating cycle
• Pressing and holding the power button will begin manual heating

Aside from that, you’ll just need to remove the magnetic bubbler to load up the atomizer with a dab a bit bigger than a grain of rice. In my personal experience, I’ve found that the Pillar works best with bigger loads of concentrates to prevent your small dabs from instantly being zapped away which is a pretty bad experience. For easy loading in the narrow atomizer, you can also choose to use an electric dab tool like the Crossing Hot Knife.

Tips and Tricks

• In terms of tips and tricks, I would suggest you hit the Pillar harder than you would other wax pens or E-Rigs as the vapor is surprisingly smooth. Even if the dab tastes like burnt pennies, the high is still going to be pretty strong and you can clear your dab in under ten seconds
• Use cheaper concentrates to save money
• Fill the bubbler just above its air holes to prevent water from splashing into your mouth
• Use the airflow dial like you would a carb cap to throttle the airflow

How to Clean the Yocan Pillar

• Unfortunately, the Yocan Pillar’s atomizer is too small for Q-Tips to reach the bottom where all of the burnt dab will be.

Because of that, every few sessions it will be good idea to soak your atomizer and bubbler in some isopropyl alcohol to try and get out as much resin and smell as possible. After, give the atomizer a gentle brushing with an old tooth brush and then give it a hot water rinse off before letting it fully dry.

Warranty Review

The Yocan Pillar comes with a two week warranty, but we have had problems getting them to honor warranties in the past, so be aware that you might be stuck with a dead device if it doesn’t work out of the box. You get what you get with the Yocan brand.

Who’s it for?

The Yocan Pillar is a great choice for anyone that’s quitting smoking and is looking for an alternative to hitting a bong. While what the Pillar pumps out is smoke, it’s a much cleaner high feeling and will last less time than smoking a flower.

Who’s it not for?

The Yocan Pillar is not for anyone interested in tasting the lovely terpenes from live resins and live rosins. Because you need the bubbler as a mouthpiece for the Pillar, it’s also not the most portable and should only be used at home. Wax pens will be the more portable option for most people.
