Hash Vape

Hash has been beloved by its fans for many years thanks to its potency and how easy it is to vape or smoke.

With the growing popularity of vaporizers in recent years, a lot of our customers have been asking for tips and general advice on how to best ways to vape hash, so here we are!

In this blog, we’ll be giving you a rundown on the different types of hash, their history through the years, and as well the best way to consume it with wax vaporizers.

Hash Features

  • Hash can be produced either solventless or with solvents like butane or Co2
  • Normally contains a higher percentage of THC than flower
  • Helps to isolate cannabinoids and terpenes from plant material

While there might be a wide variety of different hash types on the market, the core idea remains the same as a filtered-down version of bud that contains a higher percentage of kief, AKA the trichomes of the plant.

These are the small white ‘hairs’ that you can spot on a freshly harvested plant.

Accordingly, you might find that your hash has a lovely smell and can be more ‘dank’ when you heat it compared to normal flowers.

History of Hash

Hash is the oldest form of cannabis concentrate, with a documented history of consumption going back thousands of years. One of the first groups known to have popularized the consumption of cannabis was the Nizari people in the 11th century, who hailed from Portugal. Since smoking wasn’t popularized until the 15th century, simply edible hash was the main way of consumption until later.

When smoking was finally popularized, smokable hash slowly gained popularity in India before finally being introduced to English and France during the Napoleonic wars as battles were fought in Egypt (1).

Injured soldiers in this war were some of the first recorded results we have of hash’s medical properties. Research has continued on the treatment of a variety of ailments including insomnia and pain from 1850 onwards, and in the current market, hash continues to be one of the most popular ways to consume cannabis.

Different types of Hash

Most commonly, you’ll get a small brick with the consistency of play-doh. This is the result of gentle heating and pressure which compacts the hash down into 1g or 2g balls which you’ll often see in dispensaries for sale.

Typically, the process will begin with physical agitation of the plant to shake loose the trichomes. In remote areas or throughout history, this was done by simply performed by a worker rolling their hands back and forth on a freshly harvested plant to collect trichome resin on their palms before rolling the hash into a tightly formed ball, which is known as a Charas.

In western forms of production, solventless hash is often formed with motorized machinery to agitate the weed to shake loose trichomes through screens to catch kief below a fine screen. It’s the same process as you might find on a 4-piece grinder, just on a much larger scale.

Other simpler forms of hash separation involve running your hash through ice water or having your stalks come into contact with dry ice, where the trichomes will freeze and can be shaken off like leaves from a tree in the wintertime.

Using solvents, the process remains generally the same, except via the use of ethanol, butane, or hexane to break down the trichomes and capture the THC of the plant. These are then removed at a later stage in the process, but the result will be a bit different as the chemical structures can be a bit different than solventless hash.

Grades of Solventless Hash

In modern times, hash has been divided into six grades for retailers to give you a better idea of what you’re buying. These also have subcategories of low grade, mid-grade, and high grade.

Low-Grade Hash

Simply put, this is hash that contains less than 50% plant trichomes and is comparable to what you might find in the kief catcher / dry sieve of your grinder. It’s very rough and contains quite a bit of plant matter, so it’s often not recommended to try putting this through a press as you won’t get any resin.

Mid Grade Hash

Also known as a half-melt, the majority of hash you’ll find in dispensaries is in this grade and will have a bit of melting properties because there is a higher amount of trichomes to flower. For comparison, the low-grade hash will burn when heated as there is a higher amount of flower material, and is often mixed with normal flower or tobacco when smoking or vaping for better results. Mid-grade hash is often made with large-scale filtering and agitation machines.

High-Grade Hash

High-grade hash is where you’ll find the five and six-star hash that you’ll be able to fully melt in your electric dab rig. This hash is ‘full-melt’ and will evaporate when heated up for a much cleaner experience. High-grade hash is often made via ice methods, or through solvents to get a much more refined hash.

Vaping Hash

When it comes down to it, the three different kinds of hash can all be used with vaporizers, but will each need a different kind of oven or atomizer to give you the best results.

  1. In dispensaries, the most hash will be made through sifting, and then stored and pressed into the balls you’ll find in their glass containers. This is a high-density hash and will most likely be a bit low on the grading scale and will be prone to burning if exposed to higher temperatures because of its high plant matter consistency. For this type of hash, you’ll want to stick to the ‘sandwich method’ by placing it between two pinches of flower in a dry herb vaporizer
  2. The middle ground is crumble, which is roughly the loose pollen that hasn’t been compacted down or left to dry and age in barrels. Normally, this type of hash will be ‘half-melt’ and will perform best when used with a dry herb vaporizer that includes a mesh liquid pad in its kit, like the AirVape Legacy Pro
  3. Bubble hash or any other type of grade six hash will be best for ceramic or quartz (coil-less) atomizers found on wax vaporizers.

What to know before vaping hash

The high from the hash is going to be much more potent than a normal ground flower because of the higher concentration of THC. If you’re a beginner, take it slow and think of the saying ‘less is more’ so that you can find a dosage that’s right for you before slowly adding more as your resistance builds over time.

  • Low and Middle-Grade hash works best when cut into smaller pieces

If you simply place a large chunk of low or middle-grade hash into your vape, you’ll get an uneven cooking where the middle of your chunk will be completely unheated and the outsides will be spent. Either by hand or with a knife, you’ll want to chop your hash into smaller pieces which will give you a much more even extraction.

  • Dry Hash will leave a mess

As your kief or pressed hash vapes, it will slightly melt in your oven chamber which can create quite a mess if you’re unprepared. As we stated, a vape liquid mesh pad or vape wax cup are going to be great accessories to help keep your chamber clean. As most dry herb vapes have air ports to help with airflow right below your flower, melting hash will either block these holes or melt down into the heating element and cause damage to your vape. If you do use a mesh pad, you’ll want to clean it with Vape Cleaning Wipes as soon as it’s cooled down enough, so that you can simply wipe away any leftover residue while it’s still runny.

  • High-grade hash are some of the best concentrates for E-Rigs

As one of the cleanest sources of THC concentrates on the market, high-grade hash will quite literally give you one of the best experiences from dabbing.

You’ll want to stick to a lower temperature setting to not burn anything and give yourself an even melt. For heavy users, a squished-down piece of bubbler hash the size of a dime will be a good portion to start with. After your session, make sure to use a Vape Cleaning Stick to wipe away your residue.

  • Stick to Coilless atomizers

For wax pens, you’ll want to stick to ceramic or quartz bucket atomizers, as exposed coils are a nightmare to clean after a messy hash session especially if you further cook the hash into the coils. If you do insist on using an exposed coil for your hash, you’ll want to frequently soak your atomizer in isopropyl alcohol for 10-15 minutes to get rid of residue and ensure good flavor.
